Judge Marcus Z. Shar was appointed by the Governor to the Circuit Court in August 2008.  At the appointment of Chief Judge Robert Bell, Judge Shar also currently serves on the Maryland State Judicial Ethics Committee.

Before his appointment, Judge Shar was a partner at Shar, Rosen & Warshaw, LLC, representing patients and their families in medical malpractice cases throughout the United States.  He is a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, and he was one of the first two lawyers in the country to be named a Diplomat of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America’s National College of Advocacy.  Judge Shar was a founding member of The National Cooperative Association of Medical Malpractice Attorneys; a past co-chair of The Association of Trial Lawyers of America’s Curriculum Development Committee; a member of the American Association for Justice’s NCA Board of Trustees; and a member of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association’s Board of Governors.

Judge Shar has taught as both an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Law and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  The author of numerous articles on trial techniques and three books on medical-legal issues, Judge Shar has been an invited speaker for lawyer, judge, medical and lay groups around the country.

Judge Shar received his J.D. in 1976 from the University of Maryland School of Law and his B.A. in 1973 from The Ohio State University.  He and his wife live in the Cheswolde neighborhood of Baltimore, where they raised four children, all of them now married and raising the Shars’ seven grandchildren in Baltimore City.  Judge Shar is a member of Shomrei Emunah Congregation.
